Author Study
Making Connections through Inquiry
Introduction
Essential Questions:
How can the historical context of a time affect the poet and his/ her work?
How can the understanding of the historical context aid in the understanding of poetry?
Students will complete a study on an author of their choice from the literary time periods we are studying. The student will research the author's life, and works, and chose 1-3 works to read. The student will search out reviews on the author's works and make historical connections to the author and his/her works. Students should also look for cultural connections as well.
Authors do not write their works randomly without considering some particular interest first. Their writing is passionate, deliberate, and purposeful. They often, through their writing, make powerful statements about history, culture, and their surroundings. More often than not, there are connections between the author's life and their experiences within the historical time period in which they lived.
